So, you live in the United States and you have filed your federal, state and possibly even municipal income tax. When will you get your federal tax refund?
A variety of things can effect when you receive your refund including:
- E-file (faster) vs. Mail (slower)
- Direct Deposit of refund (faster) vs. Paper Check (slower)
- Regular Tax Return 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ (faster) vs. Amended Tax Return 1040X (slower)
When will I get my refund?
You can generally get information about your refund 72 hours after Internal Revenue Service acknowledges receipt of your e-filed return, or three to four weeks after mailing a paper return.
To find out exactly when your refund check will be put into the mail, go to “Where’s my refund” provided by our friends at the IRS. Fill out some basic information about your return and it will let you know when to expect your check.
Amended Returns
“Where’s My Refund?” doesn’t track refunds that are claimed on amended tax returns. Amended/corrected returns may take 8 to 12 weeks, or longer, to process.
